Rockin’ in the free world…

…. Or the Isle of Wight at least, with the very welcome news that Neil Young headlines Sunday night at this year’s Festival.  After the disappointing anouncement of repeat after repeat in terms of revisiting acts for this year’s festival, John Giddings has come up with a real cracker.  Having seen Neil Young in London last year, I know we should be in for a great show. For anyone that thinks Neil is only about ‘Heart of Gold’, try watching one of his latest tracks:

…. Pistols that is;  Next year’s Isle of Wight Festival is taking on a retro punk/new wave look, how about Talking Heads as the Friday night headliners?

Saw the Pistols in my youth at Uxbridge University (1978) and it was a near riot to get in, throngs of people without tickets blocking those with tickets from getting in, windows being smashed and people mugged for their tickets.  That was in the days of the Sid Vicious line-up.  I suppose it’ll be interesting to see Glen Matlock playing bass, something Sid never really mastered.

Yes, I’ve got previous … experience that is….  of The Police in a festival context.  I had to check the Reading Museum website, but there it was, 1979 Reading Festival and I can still remember Sting singing ‘Born in the Fifties’ and identifying with him.  For a laugh, I thought I’d see who else on the ‘79 bill might be fit to grace the 2008 Isle of Wight Festival and have come up with Motorhead, Peter Gabriel, Nils Lofgren and Whitesnake plus Gillan (rumoured to be reforming).
